Beginning Our Own Garden

My family has recently taken up gardening. My youngest sister has been planting and growing things for several months now. My mom got into it when she found these adorable planters at the store.

Mom's fallen completely in love with Rae Dunn's entire line of stuff actually. And she is sharing with us! Ok, before I get too far off topic, let me pull myself back in.

One of the first things to make it to the new house were my two sets of planters. They have been on my kitchen counter.

I've been intimidated by the idea of gardening. I have never grown anything before. And I cannot say that I have ever been very interested in it. But I do like to cook. And I really enjoy having fresh ingredients. The idea of growing my own set of spices has become increasingly appealing.
The other day I decided to pull the trigger. The kids and I headed off for Home Depot in search of herbs and veggies.

Our shopping trip was a success.

We found some basil, rosemary and oregano ready for three of our little planter pots. The kids selected tomato, jalepeno and cilantro seeds for the other three pots. Riley insisted on buying sunflower seeds. We planted those directly into the ground in our backyard. We also picked up a cute little lemon tree. I LOVE fresh lemons. And I cannot wait for them to be ready.

Before leaving the store, we grabbed some gloves, soil and a few tools.

The kids were SO happy to work outside on their plants. I think I am going to create some fun homeschool activities for them to use in conjunction with their new gardening life.

Wish us luck! Fingers crossed that I don't kill everything before we have the chance to taste any of them.
