Right around the time that March ends and April begins, the kids start chatting about Daddy's birthday. We love birthdays. They guarantee a good meal and cake! Stu loves ice-cream cake - specifically Carvel ice-cream cake. So he looks forward to his special day for that reason.
Lately he's been complaining a lot about getting older. And grumbling more than usual about his birthday. Because of this, my mom assumed it was a big year for him. She thought he was turning 40 this year.
Poor guy. He only turned 38.
When I found out that Mom thought it was the big 4-0, I knew we had to put that on the cake. I came home from Publix on Sunday afternoon with the big cake. Stu drooled over it as he put it in the freezer. Then, when he was outside with my dad, I pulled it out and wrote "Happy 40th Stu" on the cake. Then stuck it back in the freezer. He was none-the-wiser. After dinner, I showed the cake to the kids. They knew it was only his 38th, and they thought the cake was hysterical. It didn't take much to get them to help. Rea helped clear off the table, so Daddy could "just sit and relax." Buddy held the 3-8 candles behind his back. His job was to sneak them into the dining room. Then I brought in the cake.
We all laughed. A lot.
Then we sang and ate tons of ice-cream cake. All in all, I think it was one of the best. Mom decided that next year she is going to celebrate his 40th again... this time with lots of decorations. Should be fun.
