I have a love/dislike relationship with summer.
I love that we can sleep in - I dislike that my monsters instinctively wake up an hour earlier in the summer. I love swimming and floating around in the pool - I dislike that it's 1 million degrees in south Florida and the humidity does unspeakable things to my hair. I love that I get to spend a lot of time with the monsters - I dislike trying to keep them occupied, busy and not killing each other.
I enrolled Buddy in basketball camp for the first week of summer. He's had aspirations of being a basketball player. Who am I to kill the dream? So, basketball camp at school was the perfect opportunity for him to work on his chosen sport. Plus it was 9-3 Monday - Friday. Woo hoo Mommy wins.
Rea wanted to sign up for the Performing Arts Camp at school. Also for the first week of summer. Also 9-3 Monday - Friday. And finally this year she is old enough to do it. Rea has the desire to be "super famous, popular and on TV or movies"... her words. I thought the performing arts camp would be a great way to test her desire. Then Mommy didn't sign up for it in time. And it filled up. Epic Mom Fail. So, one kid went to camp. The other was shuffled around - work with Mom, "sewing camp" with Grammie, playing at Grandma's. I think she had a good week. But Rea is a smart girl. And smart kids are sometimes hard to entertain. She likes to be doing new things, learning. It can be challenging and exhausting. For both me and Rea. I need to really step up my game this week... I have both kids home. Buddy had a roller coaster week at camp. He's only just going into kindergarten, and the camp goes all the way up to 5th graders. Plus the team coaches are all high school boys and girls. And I think there were like 100 kids in that camp. It was a bit overwhelming for him to walk into the gym early in the week. The first day I think he spent a lot of time with the main coach (he's the husband of one of my best friends, so Buddy felt comfortable shadowing him). Chris told me at pick up that day that Buddy mastered working the scoreboard and timer. A feat that does not surprise me. He's very tech-savvy. The first two or three days had some tears. It was a long day for the little guy. And boy did he sleep well all week! Friday was a great day. He walked in proudly. Grabbed a ball and asked for me to snap a picture for his Grammie. This was the result:
What a ham.
At the end of camp was the trophy and awards ceremony. Buddy won the award for Biggest Hustle on his team. He was SO proud! His first trophy. On his first day of camp, he got a certificate for best sportsmanship on his team. All in all it was a fantastic week for him. He told me he wants to go back and do it again.
